Bird Feeder Pole - Why you may need one

You love birds, and decided to put up some bird feeders in your backyard. Being in front of your computer and having the privilege of watching birds from your window is one of the most relaxing experiences you like to enjoy.

You know that many birds don’t like to eat from ground feeders; they often prefer to stay in feeders that are placed some distance away from or above the ground.

You are also worried about some small friends that already live in your garden. Not that you don’t like that cue squirrel family that lives near that tree just on the corner of your backyard, just you don’t want that they scare your birds away and certainly don’t want them to eat all the seeds you prepare for the birds.

So, hanging your bird feeders on the trees doesn’t seem a good solution. You know that squirrels are extremely agile and can leap eight feet or more and climb almost anything.

The solution is to use of a bird feeder pole. That can be the solution for your concerns and also can be encouraging many different kinds of birds to come and eat from your feeders. Of course you should buy a bird feeder pole that is appropriate for the job that you want it.

A little search shows you that there are three types of feeders that you can use a pole feeder for, platform feeders, hopper feeders and tube feeders.

Platform feeders look like a flat box style feeder. You can hang them from a tree, fixed them to a pole, or even set them on the ground on its own legs. Birds like Juncos, Doves and Sparrows, that don’t like to eat directly from ground feeders will flock to this platform Bird Pole Feeder.

A Hopper feeder can come in lots of different styles and sizes. The more traditional hopper feeder style is the miniature barn design, and don’t need to be refilled each day because it stores a large amount of seeds. It’s better to mount this type of feeder in a pole in order to be able to clean and refill the feeder without problems. Using it as a Bird Feeder Pole makes the cleaning process much easier due to the roof lifting action and the pole provides greater flexibility to the feeder.

Tube feeders are long cylindrical tubes which have lots of small perches near the feeding holes. The feeding ports can be big or small openings for different birds and they are usually filled with thistle, nyjer or sunflower seeds. Tube feeders should be hung from somewhere away from squirrels or their jumping off points. They can also act as Bird Feeder Poles.

Bird Feeder Poles are great not only for encouraging lots of bird types to your garden but also they are a great way to discourage bird-eating cats from pouncing on your feathered guests.

It is very easy to keep squirrels off of feeders by installing them properly. The feeders should be mounted on poles about 6 feet up from the ground with squirrel/raccoon baffles mounted on the poles about 4.5 feet off the ground (you must be careful about how high on the pole you place them,  too low and you are giving the squirrel assistance in climbing the pole).

Use a cone-shaped baffle on the pole that holds the feeder. It works very well as long as the feeder is away from overhanging branches that allow squirrels to jump. The poles should be located at least 8 feet away from any shrubbery, trees, deck, etc. that the squirrels could use as a launching pad to get to the feeders. (Beyond that, you do need some cover nearby for the birds to escape predators.)

With this setup, it is easy to fill and clean the feeders, and 100% effective at keeping squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, etc off of the feeders.

Besides using a bird feeder pole when you have no secure place to put up a feeder,   bird feeder poles can be used also if you live in a town or a city or even in rural areas.  They can be erected anywhere, which allows you to bring wild birds to the locations that you want them in.

A bird feeder pole can also be aesthetic. It can be beautiful and add a sense of style to your yard or garden.  One of the most common types of bird feeder poles is the bird feeder pole that has Shepherd hooks.  With one or more Shepherd hooks they come also in different lengths.
