Ground Bird Feeder
A ground bird feeder is simply a platform feeder that is placed near the ground. A
ground bird feeder is usually a stern built box that allows you to put feed in. A ground bird feeder is just
like the platform feeder, but it sits directly on the ground.
Using a ground bird feeder is a great way to attract Northern Cardinals. Other wild birds can also be attracted
using this type of feeder including, sparrows, tufted titmice, juncos, doves, painted buntings and
chickadees.
Many seed eating birds are not comfortable feeding from a perch. Adding a ground feeder to your bird
feeding station will attract wild birds that will never feed from your tube feeders.
One problem with this type of feeder is that the squirrels and chipmunks will probably devour the bird seed before
the wild birds have a chance to.
Another issue is that bird seed on the ground goes bad quickly. Unfortunately, birds that eat seed that is
moldy or has spoiled may become ill.
Using this type of feeder is the best way to offer wild bird seed to ground feeding birds. Ground feeding
birds in aviaries such as Quails, need a feeder in which they can easily access and that other birds are less
likely to pinch from.
When buying a bird feeder, always consider the types of birds you are trying to attract, as well as whether or
not you want to feed the neighborhood squirrels as well.
There are many types of material that ground feeders are made from trays can be spilt and quite messy but are good
for chicks.
Ground feeding birds are usually Blackbirds and Robbins so you could go for a wild bird mix or dried insects and
mealworms, you can go for a tray and have a fat or suet tray, or even make your own and put bread and scraps of
whole meal food out such as cakes and bread.
